Be Safe in the North Carolina Hunting Woods – NC Hunter Safety Tips

Hunting can be a dangerous sport, with a number of factors that can lead to a nasty injury. Improper use of firearms, unstable or otherwise hazardous terrain and dangerous wildlife such as wild dogs are amongst the most obvious causes for concern. Here are a few tips that you should bear in mind whenever you go hunting in the woods.

First of all, the golden rule is to go hunting with a partner. If you end up with an injury while hunting alone there will be nobody to help you, so make sure that you have a partner with you at all times. That way, you will be able to help each other during an emergency. If you do plan on hunting alone, be sure to carry a cell phone, have a plan of action and tell someone exactly where you’ll be hunting.

Before you set off for a hunting session, make sure that you have a good idea of the area beforehand so as not to get lost. Also remember to check the weather – you do not want to get caught out during a storm.

If you are planning to hunt from a deer tree stand, then a number of precautions should be made. Make sure to use a good quality tree stand, one that is sturdy enough to carry your weight and easy to climb, but even then you should be aware that it may still be dangerous if you are not careful. Always wear a hunter safety belt or hunter harness when climbing. Also, do not attempt to carry a long object such as a gun or bow up a stand, as it will get in the way and could cause a fall; instead, attach a rope to it and pull it to the top of the stand after climbing.

As well as natural hazards, there is also a possibility that you will encounter other hunters while in the forest. If one of them mistakes you for an animal, then you could well end up injured or even dead. Because of this, wear bright orange clothing – the particular shade is generally known as hunter orange or safety orange – that will make you readily identifiable to other hunters. Do not worry about this color giving your presence away to animals: although very bright to humans, this color is far more muted to game animals such as North Carolina whitetail deer and will blend in with the woodland greenery.

By its very nature, hunting is a hazardous pursuit: there are many things that could go badly wrong during a typical hunting trip. However, if you follow the tips above, then you will reduce the risks involved. Above all, the most straightforward advice is to keep one eye on your game, and the other eye on your personal safety.
